Behind My Latest Splice Vocal Sample Pack: How I Create Premium EDM Vocal Toplines For Music Producers.

I was recently featured on Splice discussing my latest vocal sample pack, Transcending Vocals, created in collaboration with Black Octopus Sound (with a front page interview I'm humbled to say!)

Splice Front Page Interview

Rather than repeating that interview, I wanted to break things down properly here: how I approach writing EDM toplines, how I structure vocals for producers, and what actually goes into creating a vocal that actually works in a track.

How I Ended Up Writing EDM Vocals Full-Time

I’ve been writing songs since I was around 13 (check out a picture of my first ever 8-track below! 🎵):

My first 8-track recorder

I was originally the lead singer in a heavy metal band (I know, haha!) but over time, I moved through different styles - indie, pop, and eventually into EDM, which is where everything clicked. Hear one of my old indie-pop driven songs with my previous band here.

The real shift happened during COVID. When live gigs stopped, I focused fully on writing and recording from home. I started working with producers online and quickly realised there was a huge demand for strong vocal toplines in electronic music.

What started as a way to keep creating turned into a full-time workflow. I now write 3–4 toplines every week, collaborating globally and building full vocal packs for producers.

The Idea Behind Transcending Vocals

This pack came from a very real place. Over the past few years, I’ve gone through a lot of personal change, mainly spiritually, and that naturally shaped the writing. The themes across the pack sit somewhere between:

  • Doubt and belief
  • Tension and release
  • Faith in the unseen
  • Losing control and trusting the process

For producers, that translates into vocals that carry REAL intrinsic human emotion. I talk more about why human vocals will reign as king over AI here.

Recording Transcending Vocals

My EDM Topline Workflow

I don’t overcomplicate the writing process. Most songs start in one of three ways:

  • A melody or lyric appears randomly: Usually when I’m not trying to write, I’ll record it straight into my phone.
  • Inspiration from another track: I’ll use the energy of a playlist to spark something new.
  • Starting from nothing: Opening a blank session. I sometimes do these on my TikTok Live for some added discipline!

How I Record Vocals for Producers

The goal is simple: the vocal should sound complete on its own. That way, you’re not trying to fix anything; you’re building around something that already works.

Typical Structure:

  • 1 main vocal
  • Multiple doubles (building throughout the track)
  • Harmonies and ad-libs for depth
  • Ooh's and ahh's where necessary

Processing Approach:

  • Pitch correction (controlled and natural)
  • Clean EQ and layered compression
  • Subtle width and space
  • Selective delays and reverbs

I talk in more depth here about some of my favourite vocal plugins.

The Biggest Mistake Producers Make With Vocals

Over-processing. If the vocal isn’t right at the source, plugins won’t fix it. What actually matters is performance, emotion, clarity, and the quality of the songwriting. Keep it human.

Final Thoughts

Being featured on Splice was a big moment, but it reflects the consistency behind the scenes. Write something real—and the rest follows 🙏
